kiri yanchenko : best rookie fashion blog

Who better to dish style advice than a personal stylist? Meet Kiri Yanchenko, a fashion blogger at Fashion Blender and a personal stylist from Sydney, Australia. Her blog features everything from art exhibitions to the latest fashion shows around the world and most recently personal style posts, and with her great eye for detail it's no wonder she won in the Best Rookie Fashion Blog category in the first ever Style Cookie Awards 2013 a few months ago. She is very passionate about everything she does especially when it comes to her blog, read on to find out more....

1.What's the inspiration behind FashionBlender?
My motivation really was to share my love of fashion, art, lifestyle products and design with the world.
The Fashion Blender™ concept is to blend a bit of everything to show a really diverse range of inspiration because everything we see on a day to day basis inspires us. I try to present Australian brands when I can also to promote the Australian Design, Fashion, Art etc industries.

2. What are your top 3 New Year's Resolutions?
A) To be a better commenter
B) To source new and exciting things and write the best articles I can
C) To put together more and more outfit posts

3. Describe your sense of style in 4 words.
Fun, bold, interesing and different. Really it's me.

4. How did you feel when you knew of your Style Cookie Awards win?
I was very excited because I feel like I am onto a winning concept I just need to get the word out.
It was great to be recognised so early on in my blogging career because I work really hard on the Fashion Blender™ concept.

5. If money wasn't an option, where would you want to live?
I would want to live is Sydney or Japan - I am learning Japanese and have been for over a year now.

6. Where do you get your style inspiration from?
Art, looking at magazines, keeping up with trends, research, other bloggers, runway shows, but ultimately it's seeing lots of things to inspire me and presenting these things my way

7. Do you enjoy being a stylist or a blogger more?
I enjoy both. I find they feed each other; but if I didn't have my art, graphic design and stylist qualifications I wouldn't be as good at writing articles, finding inspiration, putting outfits together or finding similarities in things which all help to create a winning blog concept.

8. What was your most memorable moment of 2013?
When my traffic started increasing and when I started getting comments on and off the blog

9. What are your goals for 2014?
To work with more PR companies, to feature and promote more Australian Labels and Designers.
To secure Australian advertising.

10. What advice would give aspiring fashion bloggers?
Just keep doing what you love to the best of your ability and to create good quality content and take good photos.

Fashion Films | Chanel & Dior

Although they appear everywhere from stores to style magazines, ads are not enough for designers these days to promote their latest collections. Creative directors of luxury houses have started to take the director's seat, creating films that not only showcases the latest togs from the house, but also reflects the rich history and culture of the label. Today we look to two of the most iconic French luxury houses Chanel and Dior, as well as their latest films. Prepare to be awed.
Once Upon A Time by Karl Lagerfeld | Chanel
Karl Lagerfeld proves his directing skills once again in this delightfully French film "Once Upon A Time" which was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the very first Chanel boutique set in the quaint seaside town of Deauville, France. Being the face of Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle parfum, Keira Knightley was the natural choice for the Kaiser to play the legendary designer in her early years. Featuring notable names from British model Stella Tennant to Brad Kroenig, French actress Clotilde Hemse (as her aunt Adrienne) to Tallulah Harlech, this film was premièred at Raffles Hotel in Singapore (I still can't believe Karl was came to Singapore!) a day before Chanel's Resort Cruise 2014 collection was showcased at Loewen Cluster. Teen supermodel Lindsey Wixson also made an appearance in the film, wearing a très chic black feathered hat. Fabuleux.

Secret Garden - Versailles by Inez and Vinoodh | Dior
If you haven't noticed, Dior has a thing for gardens. From Raf Simons' 2012 Couture collection to now their Secret Garden film series, Dior always had a recurring garden theme in its collections. Lensed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the films were shot in the most dreamy palace in the world --- Versailles.Last year's Secret Garden was filled with glamorous hallways with impossibly ornate décor, but the second extension of the series "Secret Garden 2 - Versailles" instead brings you to the lush forest grounds of the Château.
A symbol of Dior's French tradition, the picturesque Château de Versailles brings to life the Dior Fall 2013 collection, starring Russian clotheshorse Daria Strokous as Maria Antoinette, Xiao Wen Ju and Melissa Stasiuk clad top-to-toe in Dior Fall '13 togs. Enter an enchanting world from the Petit Trianon to the surreal misty forests, complete with iconic Diorissimo handbags, colourful spring gowns and of course, stunning scenery.

Being ever the art historian, Raf Simons even took inspiration from French artists! The scene before you click "play" is apparently inspired by Édouard Manet’s famed "Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe" or "Luncheon on the Grass", featuring three people reclining on the forest floor. In the film, they are replaced by Daria, Melissa and Xiao Wen still relaxing on the forest floor but instead donning full Dior regalia, with baskets of fruit and Diorissimo bags to match.
(Fun Fact : Did you know Dior means golden in French? Now you know.)
------------------------------
What do you think? If these films aren't très français, I don't know what is.

london fashion week | mulberry vs. topshop unique

Three days ago, London Fashion Week took the baton from the New Yorkers and this season's British Invasion officially began. From Burberry and Topshop; to Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Rosie Tapner; to Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss; Britain has taken the fashion world by storm with its quirky-cool designers dishing out covetable avant-garde and world-famous supermodels. London Fashion Week is one of the most glamorous fashion weeks out of the Big Four, and its recent big-name shows have been giving style mavens all over the world serious sartorial lust. Two shows, Mulberry and Topshop caught my eye and there were some surprising trends that were prominent in both shows. Scroll down for more!
   1. Cara Delevingne
Cara totally screams "model of the moment". I mean, who doesn't love Cara? At just 20, she's accomplished a lot for a model : think Model of The Year at the 2012 British Fashion Awards, a Victoria's Secret contract and multiple covers for magazines like W, British Vogue, Industrie, i-D and Australian Vogue etc. This season, she walked for 8 shows so far including the above Topshop Unique and opening Mulberry. What's better than a British supermodel walking for an equally British label?
The Verdict : Topshop. Give me bronzed skin, wind-swept beach-perfect hair and smoky eyed beach glamour any day.

  2. Stripes
Stripes have become a understated yet chic way to make a style statement. Topshop's stripes came in various shades of grey and directions (horizontal and vertical), adorned on separates such as cardigans and thigh-length dresses. At Mulberry, the neutral stripes were more subtle in the form of horizontal sheer panels, a nod to one of F/W 2013's major trends. Simplicity is bliss.
The Verdict : Mulberry. Sheer panels as stripes on simple neutrals are definitely a match made in couture heaven.
 3. Blue all over
Also one of the major trends of F/W 2013, this calming shade has sashayed down the runway at Topshop and Mulberry this season. From midnight blue to pastel blues in both shows, the labels were clearly in love with this hue. Whether is it a midriff-baring top or a spaghetti gown, or on loose flowy pants and tops, blue has definitely made its mark as one of the most versatile colour yet.
The Verdict : Topshop. Their cropped pajama tops in electric and light blue are to-die-for, and who could resist that indigo back-baring maxi sundress on Jourdan Dunn?
4. Tout blanc
Practically every show of the S/S 2014 season has at least a couple of all-white looks, and Topshop and Mulberry were not surprisingly also on board the all blanc bandwagon. (For Mulberry, even the backdrop was white!) From head to toe, the models above were decked out in white, bringing a refreshing touch to the runway. Sheer, lace and loose fitting pants were some trends spotted among the sea of white here, and it's versatility on different styles goes to show that white still is still very chic.
The Verdict : Topshop. The netting-like white top and loose-fitting jumpsuit are definitely some Resort-worthy pieces, and white is a great colour to go with I-spent-all-day-tanning skin. What I love most is the frayed oversized jacket on upcoming model Rosie Tapner. The material is both unique and gorgeous and I can totally see it worn by many a street style star. Aimee Song anyone?
5. Print du Jour
Prints have always been a designers' favourite for its knack of bringing personality and whimsy to the pieces and this season, printed togs have rocked the runway for both Mulberry and Topshop. Topshop's collection had an undeniable ethnic feel to them, with star-spangled prints in blue, white and black as well as falling white Rose petal prints on deep blue dresses. While at Mulberry, the daisy prints were evident in the show. There were the monochrome ones on outerwear at the start of the show and orange and black daisy prints on a number of silk jacquard pieces.
The Verdict : Mulberry. Their daisy prints just remind me of the quintessentially British lifestyle, just sipping tea or having a picnic in a gorgeous meadow in the countryside. And there even was a fashionably dressed pug which made not one, but two entrances in the show. How cute is that?
